Random Thoughts
My family room is nearly back to normal. We still are figuring out where a few of the wall items will go, but the baseboards are on and they look good. I love, love the colors on the walls. My hubby did good. So, it's now on to the next project -- new sills for the bedrooms above the garage. After that, I would love to start on the basement -- adding another bathroom and adding a playroom, or I would love to be shopping for new flooring on the main level, but those are strictly pipe dreams at this point.
Ella is just as adorable and precious as ever. Mike and she spent a few hours at Deanna Rose yesterday because Ella's daycare was closed, and they needed some precious daddy and daughter time. When I got home from work, Ella told me all about the animals she saw. Her vocabulary is exploding lately -- I love hearing her say broccoli, poopie, hand (as in hold my hand), thank you and love you. I sneezed tonight while reading our bedtime stories and she said, "bless you." It about melted my heart.
Never take two kids to PowerPlay by yourself. I learned this lesson the tough way. It was exhausting and overwhelming. I swear my head needed to be on swivel stick as it would have helped me keep better track of two kids completely over stimulated. I decided to take the girls to not only give Mike some time to finish his work in the family room but also because they were so helpful when I pulled out the Halloween decorations. They almost fought over who could help me dust. It was too precious. When I first gave Payton a paper towel, Ella came over to me and said, "Mommy, Ella towel." I loved the help. I would clear off the decor items and spray the pledge and then Payton and Ella would take turns wiping down the furniture. Payton had so much fun that she was pointing out potential items that she could dust. Now, if they would learn how to vacuum and scrub floors and toilets, I would have it made.
That's enough of my random rumblings for tonight. I told myself I was going to bed early tonight. Well, it was nice in theory.

Paint, Cars Go Fast and Plugged Back In!
Two weekends ago, I painted half the walls on the main floors in the house. And last weekend I had the pleasure of NEXTEL cup racing all weekend. Its been both busy and satisfying. And of course I need to blog all about it, but it takes me forever to write a blog and Amanda is going to hit me over the head here soon if I don't! :)
First, painting--I took off a Friday and Monday and painted both the family room, the tall wall with the window that was connected to the family room, the big feature wall next to the dining room and the hallway. It took all 4 days. I was so wiped out by the end of all it. But I have to say that it really looks nice and I'm happy with my painting skills. I finally learned the fact that if you pull the tape off and it pulls some paint with it, you can always go back and use some touchup paint to take care of it! Next little project is finally, and I do mean FINALLY, putting new baseboards back in the living room. You really don't want to know how long they haven't been there.
Last weekend was NASCAR's stop in at Kansas Speedway. Scott (Amanda's brother and a rabid Tony Stewart fan) and his girlfriend Holly, and her parents made the trip down in Holly's parents' RV. We got out to the track about 8:45 both mornings and really enjoyed ourselves. The NASCAR experience on race day really is like no other. Each driver literally has their own merchandise trailer outside the track. There is plenty of other things outside the track as well. You don't have to pay for parking so you could just pull into the track, go see all the sights and sounds from the outside and still have a great day, even without tickets. One of the craziest things your can do at a NASCAR track--you can bring in your own beer, provided it was in a small softside cooler! We all brought in enough beer to last the entire race and didn't spend a dime at the concession stands. It was great. The Busch race was great on Saturday, and Sunday was probably the oddest finish to a race I had ever seen. I'd write a post about it, but if you really want to know what happened you can look it up on nascar.com. It was a long day, to say the least. So thank you Amanda and Ella for letting me have a wonderful Father's Day present. I am sooo thankful to have such a loving wife and daughter! It was really an awesome time, and I can't thank them enough. They sure make it easy to love them.
And finally wrapping up--we have cable TV again. Sort of. We have the "lifeline basic" cable from Time Warner Cable. Its essentially channels 2-18. Nothing special, we just couldn't take the rabbit ears anymore. It was just wayyyy too frustrating. So we spend about $11 a month. I think its going to be worth it.
Sounds like Ella is stirring so I better go get her up!
I'll post some pictures here soon.

Social Butterfly
As a working parent with a young child, there certainly isn't nearly enough days in a week to spend quality time with my friends. Luckily, I am blessed with great friends who are living a parallel life, where no apologizes are needed. We all wish for more time and a less hectic life, but we'll settle for a leisurely dinner every few months or so. I also recognize I couldn't have been a social butterfly this week if it wasn't for my loving husband who graciously handled Ella for two nights in a row, so I could have some "Amanda" time. So thank you sweets. I think you're the best. Love you!

Ella's First Rock Concert, Complete with a Kiddie Mosh Pit
My girl has some serious dance moves (which she so doesn't get from either of her parents). She darted to the front of the stage and charged her way into the mosh pit to strut her stuff. Okay, maybe all she did was bop her head and spin around, but she was by far the youngest one in the pit. I didn't capture any fabulous pictures while she was dancing away. I was so focused on watching her and jockey positions with other moms trying to keep their eyes on their little ones. We didn't quite make it to the end of the show as our dancing queen morphed into crabby kid before ending the evening as sleeping beauty. Overall, a great way to kick off the weekend.

What happens with no parental supervision
It was a very busy weekend. We kicked it off with the Light the Night walk. Great event. Ella enjoyed a bounce house for kids just her age and her and mom shared a bomb pop before the start of the walk. We finally convinced her to ride in the wagon about 1/2 through the family loop.
We then were up early Saturday to do a one-day trip to the Omaha zoo, where we met up with my mom, my brother Justin and my SIL Brandi. We had a great time. I just love that zoo. It did my heart good to see my brother. It had been since May, and I needed some good Justin time. I've posted a few pictures from our trip. I'm just hoping my mom has better ones to share with us. I'm tired or I would say more about the trip. Perhaps another time. My dreams await -- perhaps I'll have a party in my dreams tonight.

Parenting tips in the wild
This Sunday night Amanda, Ella and I decided to go take the long walk down to the park back behind our house. Its a good 15 minute walk at big-people pace. But when you have a toddler in tow (or vice versa) you timing may vary. And believe me, ours did. Every 100 feet or so, Ella walked, then go to Amanda, "Mommy carry...(me)" So Amanda would pick her up, take 4 step.."down....DOWN..." So another 100 feet, "Daddy carry?" 4 steps. "Down, DOWN!" and so it continues the walk with a 18-month old.
So we finally made it to our destination after a half hour or so. There's a nice playground with a couple of slides and Ella had her run of the place. 15 minutes of sliding and swinging and what not later, Ella is standing at the top of the steps and isn't doing anything. Until she starts bending her knees slightly and grunting. Well, we all know what THAT is don't we? And who's the parents went on a walk without a diaper bag? (hand raised) Amanda and I look and each other, take a look in the diaper, and yep, nice shiny and smelly looking right at us.
So. We take a look around. Well, we could change her with no one around, but that's quite a bit of work without a new diaper. But there was a trash can in the park, and we could pull the back of Ella's diaper back far enough, so we hauled her over to the trash can (please don't do this at home, or take it for GOOD parenting advice) and turned Ella upside down, pulled the back of the diaper and out dropped the poop! Thankfully it didn't catch her back or anything else but the trash can. Ella thought it was funny, so thank god she didn't think her parents were trying to throw her away.

How I spent my 32nd Birthday...
Back to tonight, Ella couldn't absorb the experience tonight fast enough. I just enjoyed watching her having a ball, as usually she thought she belonged in the big kid area. Luckily, it was fairly quiet, so there were no worries of her being overrun by big kids. Definitely a fun night, but I'm exhausted. I'm heading to bed, and I guess I'm ready to turn the page and start another year of my 30s.

Wanna Order Some Cookies
The flavors for this year are chocolate chunk, peanut butter, oatmeal raisin, sugar, white chunk macadamia, chocolate chip, double chocolate brownie, M&M, snickerdoodle, heath toffee, chocolate chunk pecan, chocolate mint, lemon cooler and peanut butter cup.
We need to turn in order forms and money on Wednesday, Sept. 19. If you are interested, it would be much appreciated. Checks can be made payable to Corporate Kids.
If you aren't interested in buying cookies, Mike and I are raising funds for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society's Light the Night walk. We've both fallen behind on fundraising. If you would rather support that, let us know and we'll give you the link to our team fundraising page.
Thanks for reading and supporting us.

What a long strange weekend it has been.
You know one time Amanda did a day trip to Chicago for work a few years back. She was so exhausted. If its anything like what I'm feeling today, I'm sure it was 10 times worse.
Anyway, it was a good trip overall. Scott, Tricia and I had a good time flying together. I got the biggest laugh out of Tricia when the our plane bound for Chicago started headed down the KCI runway and just as the wheels picked up off the ground, I shot her a look of terror and said "Holy shit, this thing FLIES??".
55 minutes later, those same wheels hit the Chicago tarmac and off we were to hit Portillo's Hot Dogs south of Midway airport. By the way we were cruising in our pimped out Chrysler 300--free upgrade, woo! Tricia was in heaven reliving some of her Chicago days while were driving around the area. Portillo's was great. I think I still have the gut rot from it.
We took the 40 minute drive out to west Chicago to meet up with the fam who were all eating at Chili's for lunch. It was good to see everybody, but it sure made me miss my wife and daughter. By the way if you aren't up to speed on why they weren't with me, then track me down online some time. Not enough time for me to explain it all here. But yes, all of my other family was with me except them. It just wasn't right and I didn't feel like a "whole" person the entire trip.
After crashing for 3 hours or so in the hotel we got all dollied up and headed to the wedding. It was nice--the DJ really had no idea how to handle an outdoor ceremony, though. I saw Curtis shoot him this look like "what the HELL are you doing?" It was really a touching moment. It was a touch hot in a suit, but there wasn't a cloud in the sky and it was nice to see the family all dressed up (for a change).
The reception was a good time--great food for sure--filet migon and other great things were on the menu. Filled us up and there was a very stocked open bar! So you know all the cousins had a good time on Curtis' father in law's dime. :) It really was great to have all of us sitting around the table, but we all knew that there were 2 very important people busy having a lonely Sonic dinner all the way back in KC. Made it back to the hotel about midnight, said goodbye and good travels to Mom and Dad since they were headed on for their 2 month vacation/retirement/spending Mike and Scott inheritance trip. I'd post a link to their newly christened blog, but I haven't gotten the go ahead yet. Sorry folks.
5:15 came EARLY this morning, but we were ready to get back home. A 40 minute drive, 30 minute breakfast, 1 hour flight, 1 hour drive home and I was back in the arms of my girls at 11:00 am. Mikey was and is happy. Even more so after 2 and a half hour nap today too.
Friday night feels like it was eons ago.

Haircut by Mom
I'm dreading the day when she decides to take the scissors to her hair herself. I've never known for that to create a good outcome. My first black market haircut occurred at the age of five when my 6-year old best friend Susie and I decided to play beauty salon underneath her parent's dining room table. We were caught just before it was my turn to shred her luxurious, shiny black hair. Of course, my hair was already butchered and I had the privilege of donning the "bowl cut" better known as the Dorothy Hamil haircut until my hair grew. A good eight years had passed before I thought it wise to give myself a haircut again. Upon examining my reflection in the mirror, I decided my bangs were too long. Of course, I couldn't wait for a hair appointment, so I chopped them off. I think the end result gave me bangs that might have measured maybe a 1/2 inch when wet. It was not a good look. Luckily for me, my hair has always grown fast. It is still to be seen if that's the case with Ella. Let's hope or better yet let's hope she never discovers the horrors of self-inflicted haircuts.
Mike is back home. Even though he was only gone for maybe 30 hours, it is always good to have him home. Ella and I capped off the last weekend of summer with our longest trip yet to the pool. Pictures of the fish to come later. The camera needs a new battery. She showed off a new skill of jumping off the side of the pool. It's crazy how much her skills around the water have advanced this summer. Oh, I'm so sad that it is now closed and summer is coming to an official end.

Traveling
We'll miss Mike, but we hope he has a great time. I'm not sure how Ella and I will spend the day. It seems everyone of our play buddies is out of town. We may explore a new park or maybe a trip to the pool for one last dip. It will depend on how late our nap goes.
Well, Ella spotted her outside swing from her chair, so we're on the fast track to get cleaned up and get outside.

Time on Grandpa's Boat
It wasn't that we weren't excited to go to a Royals game. We had free tickets after all. The problem was Ella napped from 12:30 to 2 pm. The kid is structured, what can I say. We didn't get on the road until 2:45 and the game was already in the 6th inning as we were approaching downtown. We, well I, questioned if it was worth the drive with only a third left to go. Mike reluctantly agreed.
As we pondered our next move in the parking lot of the downtown Denny's, Mike got the okay from Larry to take ole yellow for a spin. We of course weren't packed for a trip on a boat, but it was a beautiful day and the boat hadn't had the pleasure of stretching its sea legs yet this summer. (Oh, those pesky summer floods.) We arrived to see Larry had the boat prepped and hitched to the truck, so we hopped in the truck and departed for the lake.
It felt so good to be on the water with my family. It was a great way to spend a leisurely Sunday. Mike just beamed with joy and Ella, well, I had expected a bit of apprehension, but once again I was wrong. She couldn't soak up every view and very inch of the boat fast enough. She was like a pinball darting between seats or Goldilocks trying to find the spot just right for her. It made me rather tense, but overall she was great. If I would try to loop a finger in her lifejacket, she would swat my hand and say, "Mommy no." I do admire her fearlessness at times. I though was relieved once she was securely strapped in the car seat and away from the water.
Ella got more exposure to the water tonight. I made a last minute decision and we visited the pool, which might possibly be our last visit. I wish I could capture the excitement and her screams of joy as we pull into the parking lot. Before the car is even stopped, she is saying, "momma buckle." We were only there for a quick hour and even though I was exhausted from a long day, it was definitely worth it. We battled a bit when we left, but she calmed down enough to say, "bye pool" multiple times as we meandered to the car. I can't believe it closes in a week for the year. I just don't think the bathtub is big enough to satisfy Ella's appetite for the water.

Mama P-O-O-L
As we were eating, a little summer shower made an appearance. I called Mike who quickly reassured me that it would be brief and surely wouldn't close the pool. He was nearly right. When we left it was only a slight sprinkle, so I decided to go ahead and drive by the pool. Man, was that my dumb mom moment. Ella definitely knew where we were. Unfortunately, they were in the process of closing shop. Poor Ella, she was devastated when she realized that I wasn't stopping the car. She whined for most of the drive home. She kept saying "p-o-o-o-l, mama, p-o-o-o-l." It broke my heart.
Undeterred, I decided Friday after work to try again. Well, hello downtown monsoon. Joel Nichols had promised me the rain wouldn't hit until after 10pm, five hours early was completely unacceptable. I was disappointed but not willing to give in quite yet. So Ella and I decided to wait it out by visiting Mike and T2's First Friday Party. Good move. I enjoyed some tasty snacks and Ella enjoyed the space. After about 45 minutes, the sky was clear and off to the pool we went. It was surprisingly quiet and at one point Ella almost had the entire playground to herself.
On our way home, I treated us to some Sheridan's. I swear we've only taken Ella once before. As we were pulling into the drive-thru, Ella, unprompted, screamed with excitement, "ICE CREAM." She was gleefully kicking her legs as we pulled up to the window. She wasted no time consuming the delicious treat as it was only a tasty memory by the time we reached the house. No mistaken who she takes after!
Mike and I managed to squeeze another trip to the pool Saturday night. We swear as we were packing up and heading out, Ella said ice cream. Now, I'll indulge her in a trip to the pool back to back, but as a responsible parent, I can't give in on the ice cream wish. No matter how badly I want it for myself.

My First Pony-Tail
Fast forward to the other night, when we were playing in the bedroom. I decided to play hair using my stuff, and Ella actually let me do a "Pebbles" ponytail. I was so excited that I raced her into the bathroom to show her how cute her new hairstyle was. She seemed pretty impressed with it. I think it helped that I too had my hair in a ponytail. I think she also liked admiring herself in the mirror, hence the photo.
We did another ponytail this past weekend and she seemed again okay with it. The main issue now is training Mike and making him comfortable with doing hair. It's important to increase his confidence as he now takes Ella in each morning, and she's typically asleep or just waking up as I leave. This means Mike has the responsibility of getting her ready, so hair duty naturally falls to him. Maybe beauty school is in his future?

Hey, mom you pushed me
Mike and Jen invited us over on Sunday to test out some of the new toys Aaron got for his birthday. We unfortunately had to miss his party, but appreciated the time to play with the new toys. We originally went there to let Ella tumble around in a moonwalk, but surprisingly, she cried each and every time we tried to get her in the moonwalk. I was a bit flabbergasted as there isn't much this kid won't try if given the opportunity, so witnessing fear from her was unusually for me. Instead, she found joy with the slide n slide. So much in fact that her parents purchased one for her that every night. We can't wait to have Payton over to test it out. We also think it will be a big hit with the neighbor kids.

Ella tells a funny, knee-slapping joke
As Tricia says, she wants Ella to think Elmo lives at Uncle Scotty and Auntie T's house. I think she just might. Thanks for sharing the photo, S&T. Hope you don't mind that I posted it, but it's too cute not to share.
More great photos to come of Ms. Ella. She had quite the weekend, including her first experience with a childhood water toy, plus getting to play with her Fairfax cousins. I hope to get them posted in the next day or so. I was scheduled to visit our St. Louis office this week, but it appears I may push that back until August, so I may find myself with some extra time this week.

Mmmm...I love me some sweet corn
Sorry for the lack of posts lately. We've been insanely busy, trying to enjoy life, summer fun and maintaining a crazy balance of quality time with Ella with the work demands. Work for me has been C-R-A-Z-Y. It seems to be subsiding a bit. My boss wouldn't even let me take my computer home the other night. It was a nice break, but I felt like I was missing an appendage. I think I've detoxed well from my addiction.
I hope to better regulate my blogging schedule. I've had lots of posts pop in my head, but I've forgotten the topics by time I find myself sitting at a computer for leisurely fun. For now, I've posted pictures of Ella. It's a random assortment of our past few weeks. Enjoy!

There are people in there!
Cool!
So I check out this website and it lets you know exactly where the space station (and shuttle while its in flight) is located at at all times. So, we went outside and pretty soon what looks like a bright star (the space station) appears out of the north and passes through the brilliant night sky down to the south, and about 45 seconds later following the same track was the space shuttle. It was unreal. Amanda said "I can't believe there are people in there!" I couldn't agree more.

Empty House
It's so foreign to be at home and not have her here. The house is definitely missing some energy. Mike and I found it so odd that we didn't spend much time in the house. Once we finally got home last night, we popped in videos from Ella's early days and watched them before heading to bed. I miss my baby. I miss her silly laugh and her wild energy.

Just for the sake...
At lunch today I found an awesome site: ClientCopia. It basically is a collection of conversations, stories, quotes from clients that really are clueless. I've had my share, and I'm very happy to know that I'm not the only one.
My Father's day was good. Spend the morning with my whole family at Granite City up north in Zona Rosa. It was good eats for sure. We came home--took a nice family nap for an hour and then we did some shopping for some much needed supplies. My wife and daughter gave me an AWESOME gift: Tickets to both the Busch and NEXTEL Cup races in September and then tix to the Truck and Indy car race in April of 2008. Thank you, thank you, thank you! I'm very excited because I'll also be going with Scott (Amanda's brother) and his girlfriend Holly. We should really have a great time. I might drink a beer too.

Learning our Quack, Moo, Meows
Amanda's had a bout with some sort of viral sickness that we aren't quite sure what it was, but all I know is she was just plum pooped for most of the week. And of course Ella was sick as well on Wednesday, so Amanda had to take care of both herself and Ella-bella who really could have been okay to go to daycare in hindsight. But thankfully Amanda is back up to about 95 percent and getting back to her usual witty self. And is currently beating me up for not grabbing her free Sheridan's the other night when she was sick. (There was a free concrete promotion going on that day) So, yes, I'm a bad hubby.
Ella is finally through all of her medication for her Scarlet fever and seems to be back up to full speed. We can tell because both of her knees are back to being skinned! Amanda and I had our quarterly parent-teacher conference with her daycare provider and seems to be doing good! She's getting good marks in most all areas. Some things she's way ahead in!
Ella has been learning all the animal sounds this last couple of weeks. She has been putting up with her parents saying "what does a ________ say?" for about 3 days now. I give it 3 more days and she's going to be taking the next buggy ride out of town. She really is talking/babbling quite a bit. She sure keeps Amanda and I entertained even though most of the time its been incoherent. Although most people are used to hearing it from me!
Looks like our first trip to pool is in our future this weekend, as well as Father's day--which is awesome. We also may try to hit up Rhythm and Ribs fest down at 18th and Vine. Should be a hot one!

Can I just get a hug?
I know the photo is a little overexposed, but I like it just the same. No worries, Ella's fit of frustration was only a mere moment. We don't live a sitcom life, so the kid does get upset now and then.
Overall, Ella is continuing to amaze and delight us. She's recovering from yet another illness. During a trip to Children's Mercy South Sunday, we discovered that Ella was fighting scarlet fever. Luckily, we live in the word of antibiotics, so Ella was back to her happy normal self after a few doses.
A few new cute things she's doing lately:
- She points out the moon once it appears. Mike taught her it one night and each night we are outside, Ella is searching for it and uttering the word.
- The minute she hears a plane, she points to the sky and tries to find it. The love of planes must be in the genes.
- She waves bye bye as we leave the park. Most nights the park is empty when we leave, yet she still turns around as we walk up the sidewalk and waves and says "bye bye." I see it as her way of saying this was a special time, thanks for letting me play.
- She can identify Elmo, depending on your personal feelings, this could be a travesty, but for now, we think it's adorable.
Payton was over this week for an overnight visit. I've always enjoyed having Payton, but now I enjoy it even more because Ella lights up when she sees Payton. For being over three years apart, they certainly share a special bond. Ella is so fascinated with Payton, and I think we get great belly laughs from Ella, but Payton gets the best laughs out of her, it even sounds different.
Payton and Ella will get even more time together as Payton will be hanging out with Mike and Ella while Rene and I are celebrating Kim's upcoming nuptials with a girl's night gathering.
Crayons, one of the five basic food groups for tots
More pictures have been posted lately to the flickr account, including ones from Jazzoo, which I think is the best party in KC. Mike and I had the best time, who wouldn't any time you get to wear flip flops with a party dress. It's cute and comfy all at the same time.

Another Poop Adventure and Memorial Day Recap
Memorial Day weekend has ended and it's back to work. I think all weekends should be three day ones. It actually felt like a nice break from work. Mike and I kicked off the weekend with a wedding. Mike's former co-worker Lauren was married on Saturday. It was a very beautiful wedding and mighty tasty! Some of the best crab cakes I've had in the landlocked Midwest. She's a former co-worker because they are moving to Oregon very soon, so her new husband can begin his dental practice. Mike was so very disappointed to see Lauren leave t2 (very happy for her of course, Lauren was a real asset to Mike in the tech room), but he was just sad as we were leaving her reception. Tears welled in his eyes as we walked down the stairs. He commented that this might be the last time he sees her. My heart just ached for him. If I could get him to do a post, I'm sure he would write about how much he truly enjoyed working with Lauren. He might also comment on how she managed to tolerate Mike's non-stop Jack Johnson stage. As for me, I certainly hope it wasn't the last time we see Lauren and Brandon. They truly are a great couple and they were one of the few fortunate ones who've had the pleasure of babysitting Ella. We wish them the best in Oregon.
As for us, the rest of the weekend was spent focused on house projects, which included painting the beam in our kitchen, cleaning flower beds and planting some pots. I have some great pictures of Ella helping mommy which I'll try to post. We managed to squeeze some fun in there as well. Before I forget, we also have our Vue back. Yeah!! It's shaping up to be a busy week and being that it's almost 3 am. I better try and get some sleep. It appears my good friend Mr. Insomnia is back. The last two nights haven't been sleepy happy.

Convictions, Grisham and Flooding
I finally headed into work around 11:30. This wasn't a week that I could miss any work. Best-selling author John Grisham came to town for a benefit for the Midwestern Innocence Project. I helped with the PR for the event and the press avail that happened before the big dinner that featured Grisham as the speaker. It was quite the experience. From a PR perspective, we had a decent amount of press -- KMBZ, Fox 4, KMBC and the Star featured the event either before and/or after. The day after the event, the Star ran a picture of Grisham above the fold and then did a larger article on B2. That was a big win.
As for the actual event, it was a powerful evening. Prior to Grisham speaking about his experience writing the book, The Innocent Man, Dennis Fritz, one of the men featured in the book and a KC native, told his story -- as an individual serving a life sentence for a crime he didn't commit. He was behind bars for 12 years before he was finally freed. It was so quiet in the hall when Grisham and Fritz were on the stage. All normal background noises were completely absent, no side conversations, no coughing, no one left their chair to use the restroom. Their stories consumed me.
As for my evening, I was fortunate enough to get Grisham to autograph my book as well as a photo from the press avail. I also got a a picture with him. I'll post that once I have it. As my co-worker said, I look like I have a coat hanger jammed in my mouth. I found Grisham to be so down to earth and such a southern gentleman. After the press avail, Grisham and a small handful of MIP board members had a few drinks at the bar while the VIP room was being set up. I stopped by the bar a few times to check in with others in the bar. I never approached Grisham's table. Only later did I learn, the Stinson attorney I worked with on this event attempted to motion me to join them multiple times. I would have thoroughly enjoyed that conversation, but I actually was quite busy with last minute details. As much as I appreciated the experience, I was euphoric on Friday knowing the event was over and how successful it had been. As one social lady said on her way out the door, "I attend so many of these things that I hardly make it to the end of any event, but I was riveted."
I hope to resume my normal schedule now that the event is history. Work will continue to be busy until I catch up on all the work I pushed aside for this event. I am looking forward to celebrating Mother's Day and Mike's birthday tomorrow. Outside of witnessing Luke getting baptized, we don't have too many concrete plans.

Accepting Liability
After an exhausting work week, our weekend is shaping up to be low key. We decided against going to a college reunion and plan to just enjoy being at home. It's our neighborhood garage sale, so we're planning to hit that. Maybe run a few errands and just play with our beautiful daughter. Tomorrow is "G'Day at the K" and the Royals are giving away koala bears. With Ella a Koala at daycare, it seems fitting that we hit that game. It will be her first for this season, but her third overall. She wasn't mobile at her other games, so this one will be a new experience. I'll have to post pictures after the adventure.

Thoughts from the Seattle Space Needle
I finally convinced myself that I'm on vacation and I can spend the entire time wishing I was with Ella. Yet, it wouldn't be until I am back in KC that I would realize what an amazing opportunity I had missed and I would find myself regretting how I wasted this time. I also realized that I can miss her and yet enjoy this time without her. Having fun without her is not a knock against me as a mom or diminish the love I have her. While I realize to most that this is a no brainer, for me, it's taken a day to comprehend. I also don't want Mike thinking that our time alone isn't important.
The hourly reports we receive from the local Smithville authorities is that Ella is doing great and getting along just fine. I didn't have any doubts, and knowing how much fun she is having is helping us to enjoy the trip. Unfortunately the last image we saw as we walked away from her was a very upset little girl crying in the window. It's a hard image to erase from my mind.
We are off to hit the Pike Pub Brewery next to the market and then we plan to join Chera and her boyfriend Mike for a tasty dinner at Purple, a local wine bar.

Deanna Rose
It's high on my list of suggested places for my mom to do with Ella. Brian and she will be watching her while Mike and I are in Seattle on a much needed RR&R trip (that's rest, relaxation and romance). We leave Tuesday -- Larry & Glenda have her until my mom comes down. I'm so excited to see Chera, my friend since college and Mike's since high school. I just can't believe I won't see Ella's gorgeous face every day.
Today, Ella didn't let her young age of 14 months prevent her from keeping up with the big kids. She may be small, but she's one determined kid. Sharing is one concept we don't understand, especially when it comes to the slide. We try, but I think it's a bit beyond her scope.
As for me, I'm still in pain. The drugs definitely help as long as I don't miss a dose. I definitely can sense when it's time for another pill. I don't need a clock to know. I am trying to take this in stride but honestly I feel like a decrepit woman. I hope after this trip I will feel like a rejuvenated woman and mom.

Shingles
While I would love to get 8 hours of sleep every night, workout 5 times a week, we talked my reality, not my dream world. She encouraged me to start small -- restart taking a daily multi-vitamin and try to go to bed at least a 1/2 hour earlier. We also discussed my current stress level. All she really had to offer was empathy, but she gave me something even better, some good painkillers. Although, I had to hold off taking them. A side-effect is drowsiness, so I didn't think as a responsible parent I should take them unless Ella was comfortably asleep in her crib. When she finally was, I popped two, which I had permission to do at night. I feel better but I was hoping for more of a relief. I hope that will come once I know Mike has safely landed and is back home. Thank goodness, he comes back tonight. With the way I've been feeling, I'm more than ready for another set of hands.

Wanted: A Chauffeur

I am done with driving. From the pictures, you can see why that needs no additional explaination. From the start, no one was hurt. That truly is what is important, but man, I am just frustrated and mad. How do I manage to be in the wrong place at the wrong time on so many occassions?! This is my second downtown accident in less than 2 years.
I was driving west bound on 18th Street. I was stopped at the light at McGee and was in the right lane. The light turned green I attempted to proceed through the intersection and rather than heading straight I was being pushed by a semi tractor trailer onto the sidewalk. He decided to make a right turn from the left lane with multiple cars sitting behind me in the right lane. Seriously, I know he needs the space, but can you notify the other drivers. As his boss said, who came down after the driver called in the accident, drivers are taught when making right turns to stay in the right lane and wait for the left lane to clear and then slightly move in the left lane to make the right-hand turn.

It was a very frustrating evening. It took police officers more than an hour to come to the scene. They were great once they arrived. The other driver was ticketed for making an illegal turn. I was blessed to have a very out spoken witness, who was more than my advocate. She also helped to keep the kids entertained. Oh, I failed to mention that Ella and Payton were in the car with me.
Neither one cried when we got hit. I screamed and once we came to a stop, I turned to make sure they were okay. They were rather wide eyed, but never made a peep. Luckily, we had plenty of snacks to entertain them for most of the wait. Having them around also helped keep the mood light.
The best quote about the evening again came from Payton. When Rene was picking her up from our house, Payton was telling Rene that we were in a car accident. Rene asked Payton if she was scared, and Payton promptly replied, "No mommy, I was just hungry." This is why I love kids.
Right now, we are in wait mode. Since this involved a commercial vehicle, our agent said this process would take longer than a wreck involving two individuals. I'm so frustrated. I love our Vue. It is a great car. It didn't deserve this. Now, I'm get to waste my time attempting to straighten out this mess. Why, why, why was I there right at that moment. UGH! I'm just so mad!

Wonderful Warm Weather
Ella loves to play outside. Her favorite activity is riding around in her new buggy or playing in the park. We're fortunate that the closest park is right behind our neighbor's house, and Ella is keenly aware of its location. We were standing in our neighbor's driveway tonight when she grabbed my hand, pulled my forward and pointed to the park. Unfortunately, it was right as the rain started to drop. We distracted her by bring Aaron and Carter over to the house, while Jen and Mike showed their old house to whom is likely to become our new neighbors.
Cuteness Alert: I am constantly reminded how aware Ella is of her environment and how much she is soaking in and mimicking our behavior. Mike and I were cleaning up from dinner when we stopped for a hug and a kiss. Ella promptly walked over and wrapped an arm around each of our legs. Her way of saying, "don't leave me out."

Ella Interactive
She has been talking up a storm lately and every day I realize more and more how much she truly understands us. Her favorite word right now is "bye bye." She loves saying it at any opportunity. She also knows when we tell her it's time to go "bye bye" that she darts straight for the coat closet, reaches for the door knob, and once the door is open, she points straight to her jacket. At bed time, if Mike or I say "Ella it's time for night night," she practically zooms straight up the stairs and into her bedroom. I think that has more to do with getting her pacifier than with going to bed.
Back to the coat, I worry it's becoming her security blanket. I have no qualms against Ella having a security blanket, but I'm not sure how I'll explain my child carrying around a winter coat during the steamy July weather. It's odd though, she hates taking her coat off and loves putting it on. If you try to take it off her, she grips her fingers around the cuff until there's no blood left in her hand. If you are able to pry the fingers free, it's major meltdown city. This girl gives you serious attitude. It's the oddest thing, this fascination with the coat. We also have learned that you don't open the coat closet door unless you absolutely have to or at least make sure Ella's not in the room.
Lastly, and the best thing, is Ella knows how to give kisses! It's the sweetest thing. You ask for a kiss and Ella instantly pushes her bottom lip out and hums. It's so adorable. I've tried to capture a picture of her kissing face, but I haven't had much luck yet. We did take a ton of photos this weekend just playing outside. I've posted a few.

Eating Out, No More
After a long day -- for Mike, it was helping to move the Comers and for me, it was a work retreat that started Friday, I announced to Mike I didn't want to cook and we were going out to eat. We ventured to Red Robin to use a Christmas gift certificate. Silly us, we thought the noise, atmosphere and balloons would be enough to entertain Ella so Mike and I could relax and enjoy our dinner. Man, were we ever wrong!! Ella refused to be contained, refused to sit still and even refused to sit on our laps. Instead of the laid back evening Mike and I intended to have, we spent the night as the sidekick to the social butterfly as every table was either a long lost friend or a new friend waiting to be made. So while one of us slammed down a burger, the other walked around the restaurant with the little one. It so wasn't any fun, and not quite the meal we wanted, but I did enjoy watching her bring smiles and laughter to the restaurant.
In other news, Ella is no longer a Lamb but a Koala. She made the move last Monday. It was a tough week for mommy and her. Each day did get a bit easier on her, not yet on me. The director and the teacher said she probably would have two tough weeks. In the new classroom, Ella is sleeping on a cot, has a structured nap time and no longer has access to a pacifier. I know this kid is adaptable, but dang she's been through a lot of change lately. We hope Faith will join Ella shortly to help ease the transition and get her back with her good friend.

Frosting tastes best when smeared on the face
Ella had a ball at her first birthday. She adored the big kids in attendance and watched their every move. She showed absolutely no interest in opening gifts, although she wanted the toys out of the box the minute they were opened. She was mightly confused when such a large group of people began to sing "Happy Birthday" in unison. She surely thought we were all crazy and a touch tone deaf. She enjoyed the cake by digging into the frosting. Surprisingly, she makes a bigger mess during a standard dinner.
I questioned the decision to let her consume so much sugar in one sitting as she cried out several times Saturday night with what I suspect was a tummy ache. I then reminded myself that no permanent damage was done and when celebrating a major milestone like a first birthday, my standard parenting rules and worries need not apply. Overall, I believe a good time was had by all. We're are so appreciative of everyone who helped us celebrate this significant milestone, even if it was in spirit. I'll try to avoid ending another post on how it's impossible that she's already one and this definitely was the fastest year of my life. I said I'll try!
Ella had her one-year appointment Monday. Mike accompanied her to the doctor where we learned our kid's head is huge -- in the 97 percentile, explains why getting shirts over her head is such a huge battle. She weighed 23 lbs. 1 oz (80%) and her height was 30 1/2 (90ish%). The doc said she continues to make great strides in the development arena.
Overall, we are enjoying this amazing creature that we are so blessed to call our daughter.

Happy V-Day from Cupid Ella
Ella is feeling a touch better, although milk products don't agree with her system quite yet. She was so excited to see Faith this morning as Ella broke out into a huge smile and started gabbering away when I sat her next to Faith.
We are gearing up for her big bash this Saturday. I was worried that we might have to cancel it, but as long as she continues to improve, the party is still on.

Happy Birthday to you, happy birthday to...*PUKE*
So guess what--our little miss Ella was on TV today! Thanks to Grandma Glenda, she sent in a picture to Channel 41 for their "Kansas City Live" show. Roll the clip! (Its in QuickTime format. If you can't see it, click on "QuickTime" and follow the instructions on how to download)
Click here to view Ella's Birthday announcement!
That's all the good news!
The bad news: She's sick!
We were at Wal-Mart shopping on Sunday and she just leans over and *puke*! All of her lunch, and plenty of milk and stomach acid all hit the floor. We had no idea she was even feeling bad! So from that point forward, NOTHING stayed down and Mommy was home with her on Monday, and daddy has been home with her on Tuesday and Wednesday. But we are starting to feel like she is starting to come around and hopefully will be back at daycare on Thursday. Its too bad because she wasn't able to spend her special birthday today with her friends! But hey, she's with one of her parents so its not all that bad!
She's been pretty clingy the last few days, and been a few long nights, but we're thinking it will all be over soon, thankfully.
So Happy Birthday to my little girl. You are a such a blessing to our family! Mommy and Daddy love you so very much. You make us smile so big and you teach us new things everyday about life. Thank you so much. We love you!
Proud Papa.
Stay Tuned!

Busy with Change
There is just change all around us. As Mike and Jen prepare to leave the cozy comforts of our cul-de-sac, a new couple has moved in to the house just south of us. It previously was occupied by a divorced man who had never picked up a cleaning product. We are so excited to have another couple in the neighborhood. We went over and introduced ourselves tonight, and they seem like they will fit quite nicely in our neighborhood. Meeting them allowed us to extend an invite to the informal neighborhood gathering we are hosting Saturday night. It's a "sorry you're leaving the neighborhood" and a "welcome to the neighborhood kind of party." Liz and I just arranged it today. It will be good to get everyone together for one last hurrah.

One Week
When dropping off Ella today, I learned she will be graduating from the Lambs room shortly after her birthday, unfortunately her best bud Faith will not be going with her, at least not at this point. At her parent teacher conference last week, I had lobbied for them to move together. Miss Jenny said she knew it was a wish of both Faith's mom and mine, but Faith isn't consistently walking. Until she is, she will stay in the Lambs room. I know Ella is ready to move from a developmental standpoint, and Miss Jenny and Bonnie reassured me that this is a positive move for her. I just worry how well she will handle the transition. She is quite attached to her teachers as well as Faith.
Ella is keeping us busy. She is such a mover and so full of personality, and is so much fun! This kid has the best belly laugh I've ever heard. I brought back a soft ball from M&M World in Vegas and she loves to play her version of catch. The other night she stood at the top of the stairs and would "throw" the ball down the stairs to me and I would gently toss the ball back. She would just giggle with excitement as she watched the ball roll down the stairs.
We have weaned her from the bottle. Overall, the transition has gone well. We have a few fits periodically but overall she's handled the switch fairly well. Next is to introduce milk. We'll do that after her one-year appointment. Again, in one week, my little baby will be one. She may be ready for this, but her mom certainly is not!

Ella and Daddy. Home Alone 5!
But the truth of the matter is, we had fun. It was some great Ella/Daddy time. We really needed it. Not that I felt on the outside, but Amanda and Ella really have that great Mommy/Daughter bond, and it was time Daddy got his solidified.
Saturday morning we trekked off to Wonderscope. It's really a wonderful place that lets kids of all ages (under 10, I thnk) learn about the world. Check out the link for more. She had a good time, and we spent the majority of it in the "Small Wonders" room, which was just for 6 mos. to 2 year olds. There was a lot of ramps and other places for her to walk, run, play and just generally have a good time. It took Ella a bit of time to warm up, but once she did, she enjoyed walking all over the room and climbing on everything. She even had her first experience on a slide! Accidently. oh, and backwards. Thankfully it was just on her belly. There's plenty of stuff she just couldn't get enough off there. Of course, she enjoyed just being in open areas and being able to walk to her heart's content. She really does great walking, but even better if she has something to push. In this old gym, in the former school that Wonderscope is now, she had PLENTY of room to push this chair all around the gym.
She really enjoyed the whole experience overall, and Daddy was very happy to see that she took a great nap that afternoon. Which means Daddy did too. :)

Vegas Baby
I know I'll have a great time while I'm there. Yet, I'm still be missing my beautiful child and wonderful husband. Mike is so great and so supportive of me taking this trip. Although I feel guilty because I'm leaving him for an entire weekend, I know Ella and Mike will get some precious bonding time.
Ella is doing much better. She started returning to normal around Sunday. We weren't seeing too many smiles or happy jabbering until then. She had a follow up appointment on Tuesday with her regular doctor, and she said the lungs were clear, but she still had some fluid in the ears. She's on the antibiotics for two more days.
I uploaded a few more pictures of Miss Ella. She loves to dig my cell phone out of my work bag and play with it, so we snapped a few shots of the modern baby using the cell phone. Mike teased that she was checking her Babies R Us stocks. Man, I love those baby blues.

Oh, the trials of an Ida Country Sheriff...
So, yesterday Amanda and I took a half day off to come up and see Amanda's brother Matt coach his varsity basketball team. We had to travel from KC to Holstein, Iowa. So we took a little detour from our usual route, which was a great change of pace. It was nice to see things like hills, 2 lane highways(which can get a little frustrating) and traveling through small towns which is great.
Made it up to Holstein just in time for tip off. Ella LOVED seeing all the people walking everywhere. Ella was more than happy to do her share of walking as well. In fact she kept wanting to walk out on to the court! So she kept Mommy and Daddy on their toes. Sadly, Kingsley-Pierson lost, but it was the best team in the conference, and Matt's team did some good things to help keep their opponents in check and not blowing K-P out.
So, on the way home after being in the car all afternoon and chasing Ella all evening in the game Mommy and Daddy were pretty wiped out, but still had a 40-mile drive back to Sioux City. 10-minutes into the drive, flashing red and blue lights appear out of nowhere behind the VUE. BUSTED. I pull over, and the very nice sheriff tells me we were doing 71 in a 55! Whoa!! I was so zoned out and the highway was empty and after being in the car all day, I wasn't even paying attention. So guilty as charged. The sheriff took our info and went back to the car to fill out the ticket. ZOOM, there goes Matt.....ZOOM.....there goes Pam and Brian past. Oh, they have to be laughing it up. I'm getting disapproving remarks from Amanda. Mikey's feeling pretty bad. The sheriff comes back after about 5 minutes in his squad car. Comes back with the ticket. (which is in triplicate form) Reads over all the pertinent info, he was nice enough to knock it down from at 71 to a 65 in a 55. Its an $81 ticket. Shows me the court date and time. He has me sign it. So there it is, what a bummer. The sheriff goes to rip off my piece of the ticket that I keep and *rriiiippp*. He accidently tore my part about halfway up the ticket! He stops, looks at it and goes, "shit." After taking a breath, he says, "Well, I guess you are free to go, the ticket is ruined. I'm really embarrassed, I've never had this happen before...just watch your speed." I can't believe it. That's only the 3rd time I've been pulled over, the last one being 5 years ago. So now I've gotten out of a ticket without even trying.
I can't believe it.
We thanked our lucky stars and headed home.
Just because I kinda feel bad for the guy, here's his pict:
Thanks!

Attemping to make a post
First off, here's to Tricia and her long road back to be coming an adult.
Just kidding.
Secondly, Ella tonight seems to be feeling a touch better. When Daddy got home she decided that it was time to shape up. We decided to smile a little more and maybe even let somebody other than Mommy hold her. She ate better, which was great. We were worried that parents association was going to come after us for having a malnourished kiddo. Thankfully she was looking out for us and decided to eat some more. So call off your dogs!
Next, I found out a bit of interesting news today. The house the Scott and I grew up in (for a little while anyway) is up on the market. It sounds like its not in very good shape on the inside. Don't quite know the whole story, but it sounds like it was a "lets get the hell out of dodge" type move out of the house situation. As you see the house is being sold "AS IS".
While its sad to see a piece of your history up on the market, there's always that little bit in the back of your mind that goes "boy, it would be neat to bring your own child up in the house where you grew up in." But, then you get serious about it and think, "meh, I don't think so." Especially in this situation. Either way, I think Mom and Dad are going to try to see if a realtor friend of the family could give us a tour of the joint. It would be neat to see. Bring back a little nostalgia and a few stories. I mean, I was Ella's age when we lived there. Crazy.
There are a lot of topics that I want to hit on--so here's a quick rundown:
The iPhone: Want it, badly. But don't NEED it. Quite yet.
Chiefs: Seriously? That was a a PLAYOFF team? Uh, no. Not really.
Royals: I will expand on this a little more, but it must be my age, but I'm getting more and more into baseball than I am football. Now, don't get me wrong, I still love football, but with the addition of Dayton Moore, I really actually have some long term hope for this team to finally get headed in the right direction! The Gil Meche signing still blows me away, its either an incredible signing, or its a total waste of a contract. Its the exact same contract that "Sween-dog" has and we all know how well THAT is turning out, don't we?
Its bedtime folks. Now going to bed.
Just Miserable
I appreciate the doctor being so thorough in her assessment of Ella, what I certianly didn't appreciate was her commentary on that daycare is bad for her health. I get it that kids in day care settings do get sick more often, it's a given. What irks me is judgemental people, who only believe they way they live is the right way. I love being a mom -- best thing I've ever done. I enjoy my job. I choose how to live my life so it works for Mike, Ella and I -- no one else. Right now, it's working as Ella is a very happy and thriving child who is more than meeting all of her developmental milestones. If the situation changes, then I'm more than happy to reassess and make any necessary changes.
Ugh, I needed to get that off my chest. I just have heard a lot of silly comments in the past week about how hard it must be to be a working parent. It's like they feel sorry for me and especially for Ella. All I can say to that is we're a very happy family, so please be happy for us. I wish we all would stop thinking that we know how others could live their lives better, rather focus your energy on living a better life for yourself.
That's my rant for the day, didn't mean to hijack the post of Ella's illness, but back to her. She's sitting in my lap, half-asleep, just miserable. Hopefully plenty of cuddle time with mom will speed the recovery process.

Cabin Fever
I promise to post a few pictures of our recent adventures at home. Ella had her first baking lesson. It was quite the experience and quite the mess, but I do love exposing her to new things. I love encouraging her to explore her world.

Someone should check this diaper
Not inspired
The other big news is she is a forward-facing car-ridding kid. Don't fret. I realize she's not one, but we got permission from the doctor's office. She was so miserable all cramped up with the seat facing backward and would cry the instant she was placed in her seat. We tried many adjustments to no avail. The doctor said considering her height, weight and her excellent head and neck control that we had her blessing. So, this morning's commute to day care was our first adventure facing forward and she completely digged it. She sat in amazement at all the lights and occasionally would kick her legs with excitement. It truly has changed her world.
One final milestone to mention: Ella had her first kiss with a boy and she was the pursuer. I can't imagine it any other way. I guess she crawled over to Tylan and just planted one on him. I can completely see it in my head and it just cracks me up. All I can say, is that's my girl!

Phew.......WHAT? ITS NOT OVER?
But anyway back to last weekend. It was great. It really was. After Dad got home late(as usual) we had Ella open her gifts. She got some great toys that she's started to play with but all too soon it was bedtime. We got up early and headed northward for Grandma Pam's. Had lots of fun with family and friends all weekend. Lots of food and fun. We had a great time. Ella didn't quite know what to think of all the unwrapping--but she loved all the toys, clothes, cats, food, you name it. Christmas was nice and relaxing just hanging out with Ella's Grandparents and uncles and aunt. We got up early on Tuesday and made our way back home. Amanda had to be back to work at noon so we got back pretty early for her.
There's still more this week. We have the Bowling exchange coming up Thursday night and then a trip to Jeff City for my friend Bryce's wedding Saturday and then our annual New Year's Eve progressive dinner on Sunday night. Man, where does it stop?
Amanda and I love Christmas, we really do, but you know what we love even more? When its OVER. I swear, the last month was a blur. It seems like since about Thanksgiving, all 3 of us have just been so pooped we hit the wall at about 8:30 every night and we are just done. I don't know how in the world to make it clear to midnight on Sunday.
I hope everybody had a great Christmas!

Christmas Magic
I'm too brain dead to say any more. I survived my training. I feel like I just finished my last final for the semester and I can't think anymore. I was at work from 7 am to 11:30 pm yesterday. I so wish it was Friday already.
A few gems from this training:
In client presentations, attorneys show up and throw up.
Attorneys are solutions running around looking for problems.
Don't be a hotel of lawyers be a law firm.
Wow, my sweetheart is 10 months old today.
Man, I'm just a bundle of random thoughts.

Meeting the Man in Red
Ella gets another chance to visit with Santa this week as he's stopping by day care on Wednesday. I've also heard that he might have time to swing through the Davis' Christmas gathering in Fairfax on Saturday. I certainly hope he's a Northwest fan. Go BEARCATS!

Start of Hell Week
This is the start of my insane week at work, lots of long hours. I won't be seeing my husband or child much this week, so it will be quite tough on me. Maybe my loving husband can put together a post or two because I won't have the time.
Ella is so close to taking those first steps. Is it selfish of me that I hope it doesn't happen this week? I missed seeing her crawl. I really don't want to miss the steps.

YOU Better Watch Out
Our Christmas tour starts tomorrow. We're off to Des Moines to see the Bowling side of the family, and an added bonus I get to see my good friend and college roommate for 3 years, Jolene and her family
We had to run a few errands tonight and then came home to pack, but I think we're ready to go. So, off to sleep for me.
