Boy, did we get lucky. Sunday night after unpacking the car from our road trip to Sioux City, Mike and I were hanging out with Ella, making her laugh or maybe she was making us laugh. Anyway, she was cooing and smiling up a storm. Mike decided she was just being too darn cute, so he decided to preserve the moment with the video camera. We were just playing away while he was recording when all of a sudden we heard the sweetest laugh. Our heads swiveled around to look at each completely shocked that we heard our daughter's first laugh, much less got it recorded. It was such a light, airy silly laugh. I was so tickled by it. We haven't heard the laugh since then, but she's given us plenty of those wide, toothless smiles.
As for the road trip, Ella did great. She hardly fussed in the car, rather she slept for most of it. I was worried. I honestly thought we'd be stopping multiple times with her, but she really impressed me. It was a very enjoyable trip visiting with family and showing off our wonderfully sweet adorable little girl. Ella also had some of the best nights sleeping that she's ever had. We're talking 6 to 7 hour stretches. Of course, that didn't continue once we got home. Grandma teased that we'll have to bring her back if we want to get good sleep again.
The countdown has begun. I have go back to work in one week. I'm dreading it. It's not that I don't want to work. I just don't want to leave her. I just wish she could hang out with me in my office. We are spending a few hours together at daycare next Tuesday and Wednesday, so her and I can feel more comfortable with the environment and the staff, and they can get to know her. I'm hoping that will put some of my fears at ease. Until then, I'm just going to enjoy this last week and spend lots of time cuddling with her.

The Dreaded First Shots
We survived the two month appointment and the first round of shots. She screamed and fussed as the nurse gave her the three pokes, but after a little tyenol, she slept the pain off with a three hour nap. Overall, she was great for the doctor, who said we have a very alert, healthy and adorable little girl.
We discussed her acid reflux, and the doctor upped her prescription from .5ml twice a day to 1 ml three times a day. She also suggested that we add a little rice cereal to thicken up her bottles. She believes this will help with the spit-up. I certainly hope so, as she soaks a bib at almost very feeding.
Ella now weighs 11 lbs and 5 oz and is 22 3/4 inches long. She's outgrown most of her 0-3 months clothing. I can't believe how big she is getting. Overall, I feel like we've turned a corner with her. She's sleeping for longer stretches, she's not having as many fussy periods and the duration of those times have decreased. In general, she seems to be a fairly happy baby, who has her moments like any of us do. We captured her smile this past weekend. Hopefully, I can get Mike to post the picture because it's so adorable of her. So look for that soon.

What a Wonderful Night
Can we have a repeat of this night every night? We only had to get up once with Ella. She went down at 10:45. Mike got up with her at 2:45 for her only overnight feeding. Granted, he was up for an hour. When we crawled into bed at 11, Mike said he'd take the first feeding because I had put her down and she hadn't taken a bottle of formula since 8 pm. If I had any idea she was only going to get up once, I would have handled it. I honestly thought she'd be back up around 5, but she slept until 6:15.
We needed this. We'll still have bad nights and stretches of them, but one great night goes along way to restoring normal brain function. To be fair, we've had three pretty good nights in a row, but last night was by far our best one. I wish I could say I slept a blissful 7 hours, since I didn't get up with her. Nope. I tossed and turned last night -- Ella didn't keep me up, rather my head wouldn't shut off. Regardless, I'm still celebrating what a great night we had with her. Let's hope she'll continue with such good sleeping patterns.

Coming Up for Air
Sorry for our lack of posting. Things have been a bit hectic and stressful in the Bowling household. Outside of the standard new parent stress factors, Mike's company moved office buildings last weekend, which has kept him away from home. He's been working very long hours, including all of last weekend. We desperately missed him, and I know he did us, so we're very glad he'll be around this weekend.
Ella is still precious as ever. She smiles more and more each day, but our nights are still long. I tell myself those sweet smiles are my reward for crying, sleepless nights. I also remind myself that these long, exhausting nights won't last forever. Mike and I tell Ella when she's having a crying fit and can't be consoled that we'll buy her whatever she wants if she'll just stop crying and go to sleep. Yes, we know we're pathetic -- resorting to bribery of an infant, but it's amazing the concessions you'll make when she's been screaming for three solid hours and all you want is peace.
I can't believe another week has passed. My maternity leave is going by too quickly. Each time I think about returning to work and leaving her for 8 solid hours, my tear ducts get a good workout. Instead, I just try to enjoy our moments and block out reality.

Ella has a new playmate!
I'd like everybody to meet Carter David Comer:
He's the newest member of our neighbors Mike and Jenn's family. And also another set of little legs that will be running around the Brockway cul-de-sac for a while. He was born on Monday morning, was 7 lbs. 9 oz. and was 18 1/2 inches long. Amanda and I made it over Monday night to see the little bugger (and his parents). He's very adorable, but then again, what baby isn't?
Unfortunately Ms. Ella won't be able to see him until Mike and Jenn make it home. The hospital has a policy that you can't bring a baby her age into the maternity ward. Mainly because they don't know if you are bringing in your own baby, or swiping somebody else's! So they plan to come on Thursday.
Jenny's pooped, but very happy. Amanda is very happy that Jenny will be home all day now so they, and the new babies can hang out together!
So congratulations to Jenny, Mike, big brother Aaron, and welcome Carter! (and I'll throw in Crusier, Callie and Marley just for grins)

Making Feedings Fun
Last week Ella was diagnosed as having a pretty bad case of acid reflux. The nurse came to this conclusion, and luckily the doctor agreed, after watching Ella feed. The signs: She is a slow eater -- whether nursing or on the bottle. Feedings aren't particular fun or relaxing for her -- more so when she's on the bottle, but she fights the bottle and pulls off frequently. She's fussy after feedings. Her projectile spit-ups are record worthy, mainly in amount. Not only does she spit up immediately after a feeding (even after good burps), but frequently 45 minutes to an hour after a feeding.
The course of action right now is zantac, which she's been on for nearly a week. I can't say I've seen a huge improvement, but she doesn't seem to fight feedings as much anymore. The pharmacist said it could take up to 2 weeks before we notice a significant difference. Taking the medicine isn't Ella's favorite part of the day -- she hates the taste of it, but doesn't protest it too much. It was also suggested we switch bottles yet again. So, we're using the Dr. Brown bottles. I don't quite understand what makes them so special, but if they help then I'm all for it.
As for sleeping, her patterns are random. After a particularly rough night (neither Ella or I slept for longer than an hour), we've had two decent evenings in a row. We trying to incorporate a bed time routine that begins at 9. Last night, she was asleep at 9:45 and slept until 1:30. I woke up at 1 am in a panic because she hadn't woken us up by then. I cruised by her room and saw an arm move from the doorway, which was a relief to me. I wonder how I'll handle the first time she sleeps through the night.
Her weight is 9 lbs 3 oz. The doc wants her to weigh a bit more at this point, maybe the zantac will help with that.

Family Meeting
Ella gets to meet two more of her uncles this weekend. My brothers, Scott and Matt, are spending the weekend with us. I haven't seen them since Thanksgiving, so I'm excited to have them in KC. I'm can't wait to see my brothers interact with my daughter. Beyond hanging around the house and maybe giving Mike and I the opportunity for a long afternoon nap, the guys plan to hit the auto show and have a meal at Arthur Bryant's. I'm glad they have a few outings planned. Otherwise I fear, they'd get bored just hanging around the house.
Ella and I have gone a few outings. It does us good to get out of the house for a bit. We've been on a few walks, a quick run to the grocery store and a visit to Mike's work. I have a dentist appointment later today, and I'm going without Ella. Our neighbor Liz is coming over to watch Ella for me. This is the third time I've left her. Last Saturday, Mike and I went on a dinner date. It was good for us to spend time alone together, and it was hard to leave her. I surprised myself by not getting emotional. I was certaintly ready to return home though. She was in good hands, Larry and Glenda graciously agreed to babysat for us.
Next week is full of outings as well. We have a doctor's appointment, picture appointment and possibly visiting my work. Plus, we have a handful of visitors scheduled as well. I just can't believe how fast this time is going. Slow down, please.

She Grew
I told Ella to think heavy on our way to the doc, and she listened. Momma was so proud. She weighed in at an astonighing 8 lbs. 8 oz. We've surpassed our birth weight by gaining a 1 lb, 1 ounce in a week. It felt good to know the weight is headed in the right direction. Typically, we wouldn't see the doc again until the 2 month mark. Since we've had the weight issue, she wants to see us next week for an actual appointment. I'll be curious to see how much we grow this week.

10:28 p.m. -- Mom heads to bed (she wanted to go earlier, but laundry and trash beckoned.)
11:30ish p.m. -- Mike & Ella join mom (I may have this time wrong. Mike said something to me about when he put her down as I was awoken from my dream state by a screaming infant at..)
12:02 a.m. -- Ella's scream alerts Mike and I that she's starving. Her last feeding started at 8 p.m. and ended at 9 p.m.
12:30 a.m. -- Mom lays Ella down to prepare bottle after nursing for 1/2 hour.
1:07 a.m -- After 2 diaper changes and 3 oz of formula, Ms. Ella's eyelids are getting heavy.
1:27 a.m. -- Ella is asleep in pack n play.
3:31 a.m. -- Ella's cry jolt mom and dad awake
4:18 a.m -- Almost done with two ounces -- can we sleep past 7?
6:30 a.m -- Ella starts to cry, but it's small whimpers off and no, so we lay there for awhile secretly encouraging her to fall back asleep
7:10 a.m. -- Full-blown cries start
8:05 a.m. -- Finish the morning feeding, any chance we'll lay back down?

Grow Ella Grow
Ms. Ella needs to gain some weight. Her weight was down to 7 lbs. 7 oz. at Monday's weigh in. We've started supplementing with formula with the hope that she'll pack on some pounds. She definitely is one leisurely eater. It takes her a good 1/2 hour to consume just an ounce of formula sometimes -- she doesn't seem to be crazy about the bottle or the formula. Hopefully, it's just an adjustment.
Otherwise, we are surviving and just enjoying Ella. We're a little sleep deprived, so we'd love for Ella to sleep for longer stretches overnight, but we know that will come with time. She and I have enjoyed the unseasonably warmer weather and have been on a few walks. It did me a world of good to get some exercise and fresh air.
Nothing else too exciting is going on. Life is good.

Good night and doing a quick test..
Since it was a good night last night I felt like I should take a moment and say so. It was a good night!
Ms. Ella felt like sleeping quite a bit so that made mommy and daddy very happy! So of course she will be a holy terror tonight. :)
The test portion of this is just something Mac-related. I'm testing a new widget that I downloaded that I can use for posting quickly. Lets hope it does the trick!

Updated picts!
I know you all have been clamoring for some more pictures of Miss Ella--so here they are!
Its been an up and down couple of days. She's been feeding really well, about every 2 hours right now, and that is just plum wearing out Amanda. But she's a trooper and knows that it will get better. Ella has been sleeping good some nights, and not so good other nights. Its been interesting to try to find what works for her and what doesn't when it comes to making her comfortable. Her parents are definitely on HER schedule at the moment.
Amanda has been sweet and trying to let me sleep more (since I have gone back to work now) but its wearing her out pretty good. Amanda gets to bed about 9 or so and Papa tries to keep Ella up until after 10:30. We seem to think (foolishly, of course) that if she stays up later, the more she will sleep overnight. Its about 50-50 on how that's working.
There has been some good nights, so we learn to appreciate those, and know when we have a bad night, a good night can't be too far ahead.
Ella's feeding better and better everyday. She's keeping her weight from when we left the hospital, so that's good. We need it to start heading upwards if we want to keep her away from formula.
At her doctor's appointment yesterday she measured at 21 inches! So apparently in one week she has grown and inch and a half? We are a bit skeptical, but as long as she is growing, we'll take it.

Night Owls
Little Miss Baby Ella is asleep in my arms. It's our fourth night home from the hospital. She's so incredibly precious, but she has her days and nights confused. I am hoping for some good stretches of sleep. It's still early -- almost 1 am, so we'll see how the rest of the night goes. I know it will take some time for her to get switched around.
The last few days have been a blur. I always am asking what day it is. Outside of wanting more sleep, Mike and I are just soaking up how wonderful it is to be Ella's parents.
Mike goes back to work tomorrow. How I wish he didn't have to go back. As usually, he's been amazing and has taken to fatherhood quite nicely. He's probably changed more diapers than me, since I handle the feediings, and he is always helping comfort her or entertain her. I love watching them interact. It's apparent that I will be the bad cop. There is no way he can say no to her.
We've been blessed with many visitors. My mom left today -- it was so hard to say goodbye, but my brother Justin and SIL Brandi arrived today and will be with Ella and I tomorrow.
Okay this little one is out -- maybe I can get at least an hour sleep as the next feeding should be around 2:30.

Our minds our blown...
(I wrote this Wednesday evening, but its just getting posted now)
Its just after 9:07 in evening. Amanda is taking a shower and Ella and I have just spent some alone time with her sleeping on my chest.
Talk about peace.
There really is nothing else like a newborn fast asleep on your chest.
Today was a whirlwind. I swear I just got up. Here very soon it will be time for bed again.
We had lots of great visitors today, plenty of family and friends. There will be many more in the coming weeks. Its going to be stressful having so many people in the house off and on, but at least its at HOME.
Ella's been great, just busy waiting for some serious breast milk!

Baby Ella has arrived!!
Amanda and I are so very proud to announce the birth of our daughter,
Ella Christine Bowling!
Born on Valntine's Day, 2006 at 12:48 am. She's a healthy 8 pounds
7 oz. and was 19 & 1/2 inches long. And man, Amanda and I are just
beaming, frankly.

throughout the pregnancy Ms. Ella was a Mister! So our jaws hit our
floor when the doctor asked me to reveal the sex when she showed our

Clock still ticking...
Well, here we are sitting at Panera Bread, waiting out the contractions. Here's what we know so far:
1. Amanda's having real contractions.
2. They aren't very consistent.
3. Some are more instense than others.
4. They are still (after 6 hours) are about 30 minutes (average) apart.
So we are headed back home and going to take a nap.

My New Love
How does the couple that is eagerly anticipating the arrival of their first child spend their last Saturday sans child? With a trip to Sheridan's, of course -- thank you Scott and Tricia for that! I discovered a new love -- Sheridan's wedding cake concrete. Oh my, it was so good -- wedding cake, frosting and ice cream. Who can ask for more? I most definitely enjoyed it because once this kid comes, Mike and I are committed to eating healthy and dropping this excess weight.
I'm anticipating tomorrow coming and going without this child making an appearance. I've resigned myself to the fact that he/she will come when ready or when the eviction notice is served on Friday. Until then, I'm going to enjoy these quiet moments with my husband.
